Google Maps – Advice with local listings

Do a search on Google – “web design in barnstaple”. A map will appear on the right hand side of the page showing a selection of website design businesses based in Barnstaple. These don’t appear here by chance. They have been added to Google Maps or Google Places. However, there are a number of things that can be done by you or your SEO company to help improve how your business ranks locally.

In no particular order:

  • Make sure your business address matches the listing on Google Maps. For example if your company has a Bideford address, it will be difficult to appear under searches in Barnstaple.
  • Similarly this is the same for your phone number. If you are in Barnstaple, make sure you use a 01271 number on your website and on your Google listing. Google will recognise this.
  • Make sure your business is assigned to the correct categories (these can be selected from Google Places)
  • Make sure you have verified ownership of your business on Google Maps
  • Have a decent presence in the key online directories, such as Yell
  • Have your town/city and county listed in the page title of your Google Places landing page
  • Your domain name is important.  If your business is in the UK, a domain name is favourable to local listings
  • Google Places likes very much if clients review your services

There a of course many other factors, some of which are completely out of your control.   But the importance of appearing highly in the local searches could have a massive impact on the success of your business, so its certainly worth getting your web designer or SEO company to look into this for you.

Also bear in mind that Apple has confirmed it is dropping Google Maps from its next version of its operating system, so no doubt you will need to consider this come the end of 2012.
